Falls Prevention Awareness Week is observed from September 22 to 26, 2025, and serves as a timely reminder that falls are not an inevitable part of aging; they are preventable. At Alivia Care @ Home, we know that a single fall can have serious consequences for older adults and those living with advanced illness, including injury, loss of independence, and emotional trauma. That’s why we are committed to helping our patients and their caregivers take proactive steps to stay safe at home.
More than one in four adults aged 65 and older experiences a fall each year, and the number continues to rise. In 2023, more than 41,000 seniors in the U.S. died due to fall-related injuries. Beyond the human toll, fall-related medical expenses are expected to exceed $100 billion by the end of the decade. Common risk factors include muscle weakness, balance or mobility issues, side effects from medications, and environmental hazards like dim lighting or loose rugs.
Fall prevention doesn’t require dramatic changes; simple, thoughtful steps can make a big difference. Identifying personal risk factors, reviewing medications, clearing pathways, installing grab bars, improving lighting, and encouraging gentle exercises like stretching or balance routines can all help reduce the risk of falling. For patients receiving home-based care, these adjustments are often easy to implement and highly effective.
At Alivia Care @ Home, our approach to fall prevention is centered on dignity, safety, and personalized care. We work closely with families to ensure that care plans include strategies tailored to the unique needs of each patient, whether that involves installing safety equipment, assisting with mobility, or providing caregiver guidance and education.
This Fall Prevention Awareness Week, we invite you to take a moment to assess your home environment and discuss fall risks openly with your loved ones. Together, we can create safer spaces and support a higher quality of life for those receiving care at home.
